<< Wooden Sho Kannon Bosatsu Ryuzo >>
An important cultural heritageD
Height: 134.5cm. (approx. 53")
Yosegizukuri (joined block construction of a statue)
This statue used to be the principal object of worship at Taiheiji Temple, the primary one of the Five Nun Mountains in Kamakura. When Lord Satomi broke into Kamakura in 1526, he plundered all sorts of statues of Buddha and Buddhist altar fittings, including a nun, Seigakuni. After the temple was ceased to exist by this event, Yozanni negotiated with Satomi and succeeded in getting only the principal image to Kamakura. Hojo Ujitsuna was delighted by that and contributed Sho Kannon Bosatsu Ryuzo to Tokeiji. Floral-patterns made of clay are pasted to the statue. The surface is decorated with painted crests. This decoration is peculiar to the Kamakura district and a precious one which can be seen in several works made from the end of the Kamakura period i1192-1333jto the period of North and South Dynasties (1334-1392).
