This tool for burning incense was used habitually by the successive nuns from
noble families. The design represents a verse from "Genji Monogatari"
(The Tale of Genji). The bush warbler is gilt with gold and the "ume" (Japanese plum)
and texts are gilt with silver.

The Momoyama period (The late 16th century)
A box is for holy rice cake which represents Jesus' flesh which is given to
apostles at the Communion. Its lid is marked with the emblem of the Society of Jesus.
The letters of "IHS" in the center, a floral-patterned cross in the upper part and
three nails underneath have a halo around them. The emblem is bordered with
a gold-lacquered Western arabesque design. |
